Kaj and I wanted to create a collaborative work that was based on a synthesis of ideas. We each chose a word or phrase to keep in mind while creating the work, and also (as has become our process) we maintained an awareness of each other's mark-making and responding to it throughout the piece. The work was therefore influenced directly at the time of creation by the other person, and their interpretation of the theme. It created a cycle where we were each continually inspired by the other's process, and so the work evolved as it was created.
I feel that the process was the most important aspect of the piece, however I think the outcome was a good reflection of our chosen themes. The result was both a synthesis of our individual styles and a style of it's own. The piece became a conversation where we listened and learned from the other's approach and outlook, which felt valuable.
