The Vanity of Small Differences - Grayson Perry

This was an exhibition at The Box, Plymouth, of six largescale tapestries. Inspired by Hogarth's 'A Rake's Progress', they formed a story centred around a fictional character named Tim Rakewell, as he moved through different phases of his life, proceeding through different social classes and identities.

Rather than a moral judgement on issues of class, Perry uses the nostalgia of brands and decor to put forth a work that is more a commentary on aesthetics and taste. The tapestries present the different classes in a neutral manner, both satirising and empathising with their protagonist; and there are references to Perry's own life and experience within the work. Compositions echo those of classical paintings, drawing comparisons between classical myth and the modern condition.

The Vanity of Small Differences is showing at The Box, Plymouth, from 04/10/25 - 11/01/26 and forms part of the Remember, Respond, Resist exhibition composed of British and Polish art
