Kate Mccguire

Kate Mccgwire's exhibition at the Lakeside Gallery, Nottingham, spans her 20 year international career of working with natural materials, mainly feathers.

Her works address a range of themes- sometimes based on the site of the work and it's history, sometimes personal. The common thread in her work is it's viscerality, resulting from a masterful understanding of materials. She is able to use feathers to different effects depending on the intention of the works, which can convey lightness, weight, fluidity, depth and movement.

I particularly enjoyed her works ‘shiver’ in crow feathers, and ‘Maelstrom’ in rooster feathers; where she has used the sheen and dimensionality of the material to produce works that change as you view them from different angles. I enjoyed moving around as I viewed them, creating my own narrative of how the work transformed.

The exhibition as a whole has inspired me to think about how I could use greater consideration of the materials that I use, and whether a greater intimacy with the materials would enhance my own work.
