Collaborative Drawing

I carried out some collaborative sketches with Kaj, and it was fun to work together to figure out ways to synergise our individual styles. We created these by making flowing lines and intuitive shapes on the page, then working over each other's marks, sometimes erasing, sometimes enhancing and emphasising the parts that we liked.

We kept working in this way until we were both satisfied with the result. It was interesting to see the shapes slowly emerging from the page, changing and evolving until we each started to understand what was being depicted (abstract or otherwise).

The process required a degree of trust in allowing each other the agency to change marks that were made, and the ability to understand and see the merits of the other's work. It was fascinating to learn Kaj's process in this way, by experiencing it, and as we drew, I felt a continuous stream of inspiration as new lines and shapes emerged. I've gained a new appreciation for charcoal as a medium, and I feel that working in this way has given me a fresh perspective and momentum to continue on with the experiments for my project.
